The team has been trained by Sweden’s Martin Sjögren since December. He was the successor of even Pellerud, who led the selection in 1995 for the first and so far only world title. The debut of the new coach was with three defeats in three games at the European Championship 2017, but far from happy. Only in qualifying for the 2019 World Cup, the team got rolling and could leave behind the reigning European champions Netherlands. The star is the central defender and captain Maren Mjelde of Chelsea.

For the start of the World Cup, Norway got involved with Nigeria. After a very good start Nigeria’s game became more and more flawed after the 0: 1 in the 18th minute. Although France dominated the game and the opponents, came by a curious own goal of the French in the 54th minute to 1: 1 again tension in the game. Norway had delivered a great fight to France and kept the opponent’s offensive well in check. Norway had to play against South Korea on Group A’s last matchday. In the final group game surprisingly showed the Asian women the better game. The selection of coach Sjögren, however, turned two penalties and secured, despite an underground performance advancing as a runner-up. The use of winger Caroline Graham Hansen, who had injured her ankle in the 2-1 win over Korea, in the second round is still uncertain. In addition, Norway has to make do without the main player Ada Hegerberg.

Australia – Statistics & Current Form

So far, Australia has only missed a World Cup finals, but always made it to the maximum in the round of the last eight. Since February, the team is cared for by Ante Milicic, who was Assistant Socceroos at World Cup 2014 and 2018. Predecessor Alen Stajcic had been dismissed less than five months before the start of the finals. For the start of the 2019 World Cup, Australia had to face Italy. Coach Milicic let his team play in an unusual 4-2-4 formation. Although the Matildas had taken the lead in the first half following a penalty and had a reasonably good grip on the game, Italy came in second in a surprise save. After the 1-1 Italy played more committed and had more train in the game. Thus, the Italians earned the goal in the fifth minute of stoppage time the first victory in a World Cup after 20 years.

In the second game against Brazil was for the women of coach Milicic so much at stake. After 38 minutes and an intermediate 0: 2 deficit it looked for the Australians not good. This time, the Matildas returned to the usual 4-3-3. However, Australia scored three goals in just 20 minutes, making it a second goal in the history of the Women’s World Cup, a two-goal deficit, without penalty shoot-out, nor a victory. Against Jamaica, the team in the last group game then went back as a favorite in the game. After an attacking first half, it was 2-0 for Australia. In the second round, the “reggae girlz” but were getting stronger and came to connecting goals. In the Matildas, however, again the weaknesses in the defense were clear. While Jamaica was even allowed to taste the balance, Australia came from nothing to 3: 1. This was the game decided and the favorite increased in the end to 4: 1. The woman of the day was of course Samantha Kerr, who scored all four goals against Jamaica. The striker of the Chicago Red Stars has thus brought it since mid-2017 in 30 international matches to 28 goals. With Tameka Yallop and Clare Polkinghorne were missing against Jamaica two important players. Whether both can compete against Norway again, is still unclear.

Expected lineup of Australia:
➨ Williams – Roestbakken, Catley, Kennedy, Carpenter – De Vanna, Gorry, Van Egmond, Logarzo, Gielnik – Kerr
